Success Stories

Here at the Centre, we are very proud of our students and their achievements

Many students are reaching new heights and fulfilling personal goals

2007

If you call at Nia Mall in Apia these days, you may be lucky enough to be served by Sele Mose (left), from the village of Iva.

Sele finished the Second Chance course in 2004, specialising in Computer Studies and Accounting, and started work after that.

She has a welcome Christmas present coming for her family - we pray both will come through in good health!

2006 Work Experience

Below, some pics of our students, (95 went out) on work experience.

2005

Suresa was a second chance student at Marist Centre in 2005. In 2006 she is permanently employed at Ah Liki Wholesale in Salelologa.

Work Experience-MC offered the Second Chance students the opportunity to undertake a 4 week work site placement in Term 3 of 2003.  Our rural students have few opportunities to see or experience the variety of employment options available now in Samoa, especially in the city of Apia, which is on the other island.  Like last year, many of these students have been hired full-time by their Work Experience employers.

 2004

  • Fepai Filisounuu, one of the staff members, came second in the National University of Samoa Short Story Competiton. The topic was: "Committing Suicide is not the Answer to Youth Problems." We are proud of his achievement, and his ideas will help UMCSL students.

  • The Ulimasao Marist Centre students and teachers participated in the Independence Day Celebrations and march in Apia, some having to travel long distances to be there.

2003

  • Literacy and numeracy levels of new students have shot up in the first six months-almost every single student showed improvements on English and Math assessments
  • Small fundraisers by students and staff have been successful and effective
  • 30 students and their parents, five teachers, and two Marist Brothers will be heading to the brother country of American Samoa in January, 2004.  Dances, plays, speeches, and sales of student-made goods are planned to raise funds for the school.
  • The Art program was launched at the beginning of the second term, with great triumph.  Students are now able to express themselves like never before, by creating.  The program will be into woodcarving in the third term.
  • Second Chance students are now off for their four weeks of work-experience (started Oct. 14).  Work-experience is an internship, of sorts, where students work for companies, without pay, to get the understanding of what it is like to be employed.  This was a huge success last year, as many companies were so impressed with their "interns" that they were hired to stay on the job.
  • Congratulations to Laasaga Selu for winning 1st Place in Savaii's island wide Samoan Speech Competition!  Laasaga is a Second Chance student who has always tried her best to succeed in school.  Her wonderful speech won her a trip to Itu o Tane to represent the Marist Centre in the Annual Samoan Speech Competition held on July 25th, 2003.  She spoke brilliantly, and was recognized by the judges and the audience as the best speaker that day. Good work Laasaga!

2002

  •   Two Marist Centre students (out of only three from Samoa ) were selected for overseas scholarships to Brisbane, Australia to participate in a Small Business Enterprise program.

  •   62% of MCSL graduates found employment and a further 20% went on to further education at higher institutions

Marist Centre Students won first place in  Samoa's National Garden Exhibition arranged by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture
