Our Mission Marist
Centre for Special Learning is committed to the education of the
marginalized youth of There are many young people in Savai'i that have been forced to the margins of society, the edges. For many reasons, these "at risk" young people are in danger of losing all opportunity for education. They are the focus of our institution. Goals and Objectives
1.
To attract those who have
experienced failure or lack of special education in their previous
educational history 2.
To provide these students
with an environment and programs that will raise their self-esteem and
their belief in themselves as achievers 3.
To help them focus on skills
for life and for economic survival Objectives: 1.
To enroll up to 70 older
students (ages 18 and up) in a “Second Chance” program and provide
them with work skills 2.
To enroll up to 60 students
of post-primary age (14-18) in a “Youth” program and provide them with
basic literacy (Samoan and English), numeracy and other skills. 3.
To provide holistic
education in body, mind, and spirit through courses in Religion and
Spirituality, Art, Dance, Drama, Music, and Sports. 4.
To provide fully-equipped
Agriculture, Computing, Home Economics and Vocational Departments,
available to all students 5.
To provide Block Courses in
afternoons/evenings for people of the village community General Goals to be
achieved by 2007 1.
To have qualified and
competent staff available to meet the special learning needs of students 2.
To maintain adequate facilities for
catering to part-time students who want to study Computer skills,
Literacy, Tailoring, Catering, Art, Agriculture or Technical subjects 3. To make the whole Project financially sustainable The Management Team
of MCSL recently formed a five year Strategic Plan for the centre.
