A Cultural Festival for children, youth and adults with disability in Savai'i.

The first Cultural festival for people with disabilities in Samoa, held at the UIimasao Marist Centre in Savai'i, was dedicated to the late Ms Fiasili Keil. Fiasili, considerered a Samoan spiritual icon for people with disabilities in Samoa, passed away in 2001, aged 51 years. The objective of the festival was to provide children, youth and adults with disabilities the opportunity to experience and participate in a variety of cultural activities. The festival also explored the latent talents of these people through a broad range of activities, including music, dance, art, drama, language expression and mural painting.

On hand to assist in the activities, under the guidance of Peter and Jenny West, were the staff, prefects senior students of Ulimasao Marist Centre. The U-MCSL students, initially shy and apprehensive about their role as hosts, were all soon fully enjoying the day’s activities together with their visitors. Barriers and prejudices are not so insurmountable to the youth, especially in fun filled situations.
